In July 1997, I, and bunch of other diplomats, flew from Rome to Sarajevo on an Italian military jet. After passing the east coast of Italy, the plane descended and flew low over the Adriatic. The sun hit the azure waters and looked like fields of diamonds until the Dinaric Alps rose steeply from the sea.
With that beauty began my love affair with the Adriatic. And once up and over the mountains and into Bosnia-Herzegovina, I looked down on thousands of burned and bombed out houses and hundreds of destroyed villages. As in any love affair, pain plays a starring role, especially when beauty is involved.
An amazing region full of strong people with a long history and rich cultures. The Balkans, and particularly ex-Yugoslavia, could be the center of Earth's heart. I went to post-war Bosnia-Herzegovina because of my job, but I stayed because of the people, including the members of my Adriatic families.
I feel the same way every time I go back.
lyrics
Azure…
…water meets the mountain,
Diamonds in the sun.
A land of pain and beauty,
I’ve been to where I’m from.
I’ve been to where I’m from.
Country face can speak of hardship,
Rugged hands can tell the past,
Steely eyes can see the future,
Cause our soul was built to last.
Cause our soul was built to last.
Went to the mountain, went to the sea,
Looked for my baby, bring her home to me.
Cause darling that’s love, love that I’m dreaming of.
Trouble in the darkness,
Fire from the sky.
You dream that you can hurt us,
But the soul will never die.
Cause our soul will never die.
